Road Weary: Seven skaters each grab a photographer and hit the road

This is a pretty interesting article, from the July 2003 issue of Skateboarder. Each of the seven skaters paired up with a photographer and took a trip for several days to see what kind of coverage they could get without the pressures of demos or touring with a team. The seven photographers were Brian Gaberman, Oliver Barton, Mike O'Meally, Jaime Owens, Jai Tanju, Ben Colen, and Shigeo.

Trip to Cairo (Foster), Egypt - January/February 2001 Skateboarder

This article was written by Aaron Meza and describes a trip that he, Cairo [Roger] Foster, Brian Anderson, Brad Staba, and Mike O'Meally (and maybe others?) took to Cairo, Egypt to seek out new spots and see the sights. If you didn't already know, Cairo live in the city for a few years when he was a kid, which was the inspiration for him getting the nickname.

One Week With Brandon Biebel

Appearing in the January 2004 issue of SLAP, this was the first in series of "One Weekend With" features in the magazine. I don't know how long the feature actually lasted, because I only have a few issues of SLAP from 2004 and I only saw it pop up again in the March 2004 one (McCrank). Biebel ended up getting two manual tricks at Pier 7, and the nollie flip at the end is a really great photo. Words by Mark Whitely, and photos by Jeff Landi.

enjoi Miami - June 2005 Skateboarder

This article was written and photographed by Jonathan Mehring, and is one of the first trip articles that he put together for Skateboarder. The motivation behind posting this one was because I listened to his Beyond Boards interview from January 2022, and he has tells a story from this trip about Jerry's switch 180 5-0 revert on the Miami Beach High School blue hubba. The full story is about an hour into the interview. In short, Jerry was trying the trick over and over and getting increasingly frustrated, all while Mehring's supply of camera film was dwindling. Eventually, Jerry asked him how much film was left, and Mehring notified him that it was "last roll, last try". Jerry came through and landed his next attempt, and you can see the sequence below.

Sunny England By The Sea: Blueprint in Mallorca (June 2009)

Years ago, the Blueprint Skateboards team would take annual skate trips to Mallorca, and produced at least two articles from these trips, if not more - I've only come across two so far. Backside nosegrinds on the McKee Street Bridge

This Houston spot doesn't pop up too often, but looks unique enough that I always notice it when it's in a video (most notable appearance here). I first saw it when I got the July 2008 issue of Skateboarder in the mail and saw Jose Rojo's backside nosegrind on it (shot by John Bradford). Five years later, Zered Bassett did the same trick switch for an October 2013 Spitfire ad (no photo credit provided, scanned from that month's issue of Thrasher). It's always fun to see the progression of tricks at spots over time, and I get excited when I come across something like this.

Ishod Wair - switch flip Love Gap

Zander Taketomo's photo of Ishod's switch flip appeared in the October 2009 issue of Skateboarder, with a little backstory provided. To my knowledge, this is also the first time Ishod appeared in a magazine. Four years later, he was SOTY.

Howl: February 2008

The two tricks from the Howl section of this issue of Skateboarder. One is an incredibly technical ledge trick, and the other is an ollie. Both are great.

Chima Ferguson - bigspin heelflip sequence
