My Favorite Covers: February 2007 Skateboarder

Here's another one of my favorite covers: Brent Atchley boosting a frontside ollie off of a piece of warped concrete alongside the "flood-ravaged banks of the Mississippi" in New Orleans. Photo by Marc Falkenstien. I remember seeing this for the first time at the public library and being in awe of how high in the air he is, and thought it was really cool how Marc shot it so that you were looking at the concrete slab straight-on. Tosh Townend also had a photo here that was on the Contents page. This is definitely a spot that looks much easier to skate than it actually probably was.

Steve Nesser - Loring Pyramid ollie

A February 2007 Adio ad featuring Steve Nesser ollieing the hip from the big bank to little bank on the Loring Greenway pyramid in Minneapolis. Photo by Ian O'Connor. I scanned this from Skateboarder, and you can see the clip here. 18 years later, local skaters are still getting tricks here.

Oakland - February 2007

This February 2007 SLAP article features the city of Oakland and its spots, with testimonials from its skateboarding residents of the time. Photos by Ken Nagahara, Dan Z, Joe Brook, and Mark Whitely. Testimonials by Max Schaaf, Dave Rosenberg, Jason Phares, Hustle Jamie, and Nagahara.

(I scanned and posted this almost exclusively because of the photo of Olu's front nose into the bank).

Jeremy Reeves interview - February 2007

This is Jeremy's 16-page feature interview from the February 2007 issue of SLAP. Words and photos by Dan Z. An underrated Minnesota ripper, he grew up in St. Paul, which makes him the closest hometown pro for me (unless this guy somehow gets a deck someday). Jeremy is also one of the nicest skaters I've talked to over Instagram, and is always willing to share stories behind photos and clips I've asked him about.

The Rat Pack: Back to Da Boot

This article covers Giovanni Reda's fifth annual skate trip to Italy and appeared in the February 2007 issue of Skateboarder. For this one, he brought along filmer Federico Vitetta, Danny Montoya, Guy Mariano, Jesus Fernandez, and Mikey Taylor. Words and photos by Reda.

Sierra Fellers - February 2007 interview

Sierra Fellers's interview from the February 2007 issue of Skateboarder. Words by Adam Salo and photos by David Broach.

The Lingua Franca of Kenny Reed

A short 2007 interview with Kenny Reed about why he likes to travel so much and why it inspires him, and the differences he's observed between Americans and Europeans during those travels. There's a few cool black & white photos by Jonathan Mehring in this, another guy who is no stranger to travelling all over the globe (he even made a book about it!)

Gilbert Crockett interview - May 2010

In this interview, Gilbert discusses what it was like living in the Black Box dorms, his then-recent departure from Mystery and Fallen, and living with his weed-smoking hippie grandma. Words by Jaime Owens and photos by Jonathan Mehring. Gilbert also had the cover of this issue with a nollie heelflip into a Richmond bank (also shot by Mehring). Coincidentally, three years earlier, he made his first appearance in Skateboarder in the Who's Hot section, where there was also a photo of him doing a nollie heel.
