Roll-Up Rituals: Skaters and their superstitions

The Quirk section in Skateboarder during the early aughts often featured interesting topics and lists of things about skateboarders that you wouldn't usually think about; one of the many treasures within these early issues (usually written/put together by Mackenzie Eisenhour). I'd never seen this about about skater superstitions until earlier this evening when I scanned it in, and it's one of my favorites.

Divulge: Rodney Mullen

This was the very first Divulge interview from Skateboarder, appearing in the September 1999 issue. In this, Rodney talks briefly about what his experience was like growing up as a skateboarder in Florida, and the struggles he went through with his father trying to make him stop. The Rise & Fall of Plan B

This article appears in the November 2003 issue of Skateboarder, and was compiled by the very knowledgeable Mackenzie Eisenhour. It's a good history lesson on the influence that the first incarnation of Plan B had on the skate industry.

Rodney Mullen: In His Own Words

The first skate video I ever saw was Almost's Round Three, with included Rodney Mullen's last full part. I used to watch that video & that part multiple times a day, every day for maybe a full year. Thankfully, as I watched more skate videos and read more magazines, I outgrew the how-many-times-can-your-board-flip-in-a-line phase and my preferred type of skateboarding to watch expanded. With that being said, when I saw this article for the first time two weeks ago, it was a really fun read and brought me back to those early days when I was discovering the interest that would define my life for the next 15 years (and counting).

Rodney Mullen's primo slide photo is one of the most iconic covers of all-time, and the brief backstory by Mullen inside of the cover makes it even more memorable. Props to Rodney, Seu Trinh & Pat Rocco for making this cover happen.

Face To Face - Skateboarder Summer 1998

The second special edition of Skateboarder Magazine has a feature in it called Face To Face, which might have been what inspired the Cohorts feature? Maybe? That's pure speculation. Regardless, it's a pretty interesting article of skaters interviewing each other.
