I've been a skateboarder for fifteen years, but I've been reading skateboarding magazines even longer than that. My local public library had about 12-18 months worth of past Skateboarder magazines, and about once a week I would grab every single issue and look through them, page by page, soaking in as much information as possible. What fascinated me as much as the photos was how much the writers & skaters had to say about trips, tricks, what makes them want to skate, and so much more. I remember thinking it was so interesting that there were so many stories and so much history behind skating. It wasn't just a thing to do; being a skateboarder was a way to look at & react to the world around you.
Part of why I started this blog is because I wanted a way to preserve all of these stories, articles & photos that bring vibrancy to skateboarding. Knowing the history of how the things you love came to be helps you understand & appreciate them more, and creates a sense of respect for those who came before you. So when I discovered the "Origins" articles in The Skateboard Mag when I bought all of the back issues (they stopped at issue 66 - I didn't subscribe until issue 80), I was really stoked and knew that I wanted to post them all because they hold so much skate history that even I wasn't aware of, even after 15-16 years of being a skate nerd.
So, here they are: every "Origins" article, from Issue 5 to Issue 66 (with a few missed issues towards the end). I hope you enjoy them and find value in them. If not, I hope you at least enjoy the sick photos of the tricks!
