Caviar Hunters: Trekking Through Russia with the Cliche Team
This article from the March 2007 issue of Skateboarder covers a trip Leo Sharp took with members of the Cliche team to Russia, in search of skate spots and caviar. Words and photos by Leo.
Under The Jailhouse
This October 2004 The Skateboard Mag feature documents a permitted skate session at the Los Angeles County Correctional Facility, secured by Brian Lotti and Elwood Denims Co. for filming for the skateboard movie 1st & Hope (working title was Way Back When). You can watch it here, and this is the direct link to the footage from the LACC session. The session was on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend - May 30, 2004.
I borrowed the DVD of 1st & Hope from a friend in high school and watched it over and over. It's very soothing to watch, and it is also how I became interested in Beck. My favorite part is the end montage set to "Jack-Ass".
Words by Sean Christopher and photos by Atiba.
How It Went Down: San Diego Sports Arena
The How It Went Down article from the July 2007 issue of Skateboarder, written by Adam Sullivan. No photo credit given for the photo of Jeremy Wray's triple set ollie, except that it was provided courtesy of Element Skateboards. This was published 17 years ago, so a bit more has gone down at this spot since it was written.
Stacy Lowery interview - April 2007
Stacy Lowery's interview from the April 2007 issue of Skateboarder. Words by Adam Salo and photos by John Bradford. That switch wallie crooks sequence is fantastic.
Badass Meets Dumbass - The Girl/Chocolate Tour
This is the feature article for Girl & Chocolate's 2006 Badass Meets Dumbass Summer US tour, which also produced the memorable video with the same name. Words and photos by Ben Colen. It was published in the April 2007 issue of Skateboarder, which had Malto's Kansas City 360 flip on the cover. Lots of good content in this one, as expected. Out of all of the photos, though, the sequence of Koston's mattress Caballerial has always stuck with me, and I have tried skating on one at least one time because of it.
A Whole Lot To Do About Nothing
This September 2007 Skateboarder article documents an Emerica trip to Australia (with special guest Rick McCrank). The only words accompanying Brian Gaberman's photos are philosophical quotes about the value of life and time - perhaps Gaberman had writer's block and felt he was wasting too much time coming up with some words for the article? We'll never know - or maybe he'll see this and leave a comment.
Iron Arm Allen: Vans in Singapore
This article from the September 2007 issue of Skateboarder tells the story of how Andrew Allen broke Van Wastell's arm while on a trip to Singapore (and a stop in Malaysia). Words and photos by Jonathan Mehring. I especially like the photo of Dylan's stalefish on the Merdeka Sun Clock in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Last Attempt - Rick Raymond
A brief photo feature by Rick Raymond, with an even briefer written introduction by the photographer. I have never heard of Rick before or since seeing this one. Maybe a pseudonym? Let me know if you know. This appeared in the October 2004 issue of The Skateboard Mag and includes photos of Tony Cox, BA and Janoski.
Darrell Stanton - March 2007 interview
Darrell's interview from the March 2007 issue of Skateboarder. This interview came out right after he had quit Plan B, got kicked off of DC, and joined the Element squad. He also talks a bit about what it was like to quit Real, amongst other things. Words by Alex Klein and photos by Andrew Mapstone.
Like probably many others, I remember needing to look at that dolphin flip sequence closely to really figure out what was happening with that trick.
On The Waterfront: Jonathan Mehring Photo Feature
This photo feature from the August 2007 issue of Skateboarder was inspired by Mehring wanting to intentionally stay home in New York and shoot photos there, taking a break from always being on a trip and shooting photos somewhere else. There's some excellent shots in this with iconic landmarks in the background, Puleo's back tail photo being my favorite.
