The Lingua Franca of Kenny Reed

A short 2007 interview with Kenny Reed about why he likes to travel so much and why it inspires him, and the differences he's observed between Americans and Europeans during those travels. There's a few cool black & white photos by Jonathan Mehring in this, another guy who is no stranger to travelling all over the globe (he even made a book about it!)

Gilbert Crockett interview - May 2010

In this interview, Gilbert discusses what it was like living in the Black Box dorms, his then-recent departure from Mystery and Fallen, and living with his weed-smoking hippie grandma. Words by Jaime Owens and photos by Jonathan Mehring. Gilbert also had the cover of this issue with a nollie heelflip into a Richmond bank (also shot by Mehring). Coincidentally, three years earlier, he made his first appearance in Skateboarder in the Who's Hot section, where there was also a photo of him doing a nollie heel.

This feature is from the June 2004 issue of Skateboarder and documents (mostly through photos) a nine-day trip to Australia with skateboarders Ryan Smith, Lindsey Robertson, and Cale Nuske, photographer Mike O'Meally, and videographer Greg Hunt (who also wrote the intro). Ryan's crooked grind at the beginning of the article is so damn gnarly.

15 Years of Chocolate Skateboards

Featured in the August 2009 issue of The Skateboard Mag. Words by Kevin Wilkins. I loved seeing these types of articles in magazines as I was becoming more and more engrossed in skateboarding. They would help fill in gaps of knowledge I had about legacy brands like Chocolate. Also, it's crazy to realize that Vincent Alvarez has been on Chocolate for 15 years, now!

Zero/Mystery Canada Tour 2004

The November 2004 issue of Skateboarder included this 18-page tour article, filled with tricks the Zero & Mystery teams got during demos and touring in Canada. Most of the tricks in this article appear in the New Blood DVD tour montage bonus feature, which I watched a lot as a teenager. Words and photos by Shigeo.

Pier 7: End of an Era

A brief four-page write-up by Alex Klein about the beginning and end (or so was thought) of the Pier 7 ledges, with some photos of tricks by some of the most notable skaters to frequent the spot. Photos by Brian Gaberman, Mike Blabac, Pete Thompson, and Ken Goto. I also included some photos of what the spot looked like in May 2023, when I visited it during a trip to San Francisco.
