Baker/Deathwish Tour article - July 2009 The Skateboard Mag

There aren't a lot of words in this article, which is okay because the pictures speak for themselves (that was a really corny sentence, but it's true). The Antwuan back heel photo is amazing, it does not look like he is skating a double set.

Kenny Hughes, backside nosebluntslide for August 2002 Element ad

Appears in the back of the August 2002 issue of Skateboarder. No photo credit given. I wonder what this guy is currently up to?

The Jamie Thomas Interview - December 2003 Skateboarder

Words by Aaron Meza. This interview includes photos of tricks that appeared in Jamie's New Blood and Reason To Believe parts. I love the clip of the 5-0 on that big square rail.

I never understood why people skated the wooden wheelchair ramp spot that Jamie does the tuck knee at. There's a curb right after you land, you'd think they could just find another ramp to rail spot... although, it did make for an entertaining Geoff Rowley clip in Really Sorry.

Also neat to see Jamie talk about Mystery before it officially was a thing (last question). Enjoy!

Santee, CA Rail to drop photos

As far as I know, there have been six tricks done at this spot:
  • Jamie Thomas, fs 50-50 (Misled Youth) and fs Smith (Dying To Live)
  • Jim Greco, fs boardslide (no footage) and fs lipslide (Baker 3)
  • Jordan Hoffart, bs feeble & bs crooks (Fun)
I can only assume that Jamie's tricks appeared in magazines, but if they did they're either in magazines I don't own (most likely TWS, SLAP or Thrasher) or I haven't found them yet in my 2001~2003 Skateboarders. If anyone knows where they are, please let me know!

I don't know if Greco's front boardslide was a land, as there is no footage of it published anywhere. My guess is that he didn't roll away or didn't like how he rolled away, but the cover was published anyways as Greco may have intended to go back and get the boardslide for the clip. The photo is really sick, and maybe someday we will see the clip(s). Or, maybe Greco landed it, but the footage got fucked up somehow and he figured that if he was going to go back, he might as well try the lipslide instead.

I feel like because I said something about Jamie and Greco, I have to say something about Jordan. His Fun part is still so crazy for today's standards. Go watch it if you haven't see in. First trick is a front tail down Staples Center...!

I don't own this Transworld issue; this scan actually comes from Look Back Library/Kevin Marks, who in turn got the scan from a friend of his.

Some shoe ads from the December 2003 Skateboarder

Here are four two-page-spread shoe company ads from the December 2003 Skateboarder issue that I thought were really cool. That's it, that's the entire post.

Jamie Thomas for Fallen

John Cardiel for Vans

Cairo Foster for Lakai

Carlos Ruiz - El Toro back lip sequence

Photo sequence was taken by Deville Nunes and appears in the Focus section of the December 2003 issue of Skateboarder.

Jason Lee & Chris Pastras announcing the restart of Stereo Skateboards

In the October 2003 issue of Skateboarder, Aaron Meza interviews Jason Lee and Chris Pastras about them restarting Stereo Skateboards after a 3-year hiatus (7 years for Jason, who left the company in 1996). They also got a few tricks for the article (all photos by Mike O'Meally), and after 2 or 3 days of trying, Jason got his 360 flips back.

Tom Penny's 2003 Divulge Interview

This 2-page interview appears in the October 2003 issue of Skateboarder. In it, Tom talks about becoming a father, being sober, and leaving the United States in 1996 and temporarily falling off the map for a bit.

No credit is given for the interview; I'm going to assume it was done by Meza.

Rodrigo Tx - hardflip back lip on the LA High rail

Rodrigo Tx is really fucking good on a skateboard and I feel was at the forefront of tech street skating for at least a decade. Hardflip back lip on a handrail must have been crazy for readers to see when they first opened up the October 2003 issue of Skateboarder and saw this eS ad. Photo sequence by Atiba Jefferson.

Leo Romero in 2003

Not counting his Who's Hot from a 2002 Skateboarder, this is the earliest photo of Leo Romero that I have found in a magazine (so far). Ollie over the bar to front crooks off of a loading dock in LA. Photo by Shigeo. Appears in the Contents section of the October 2003 issue of Skateboarder.

Pool airs in the September 2008 The Skateboard Mag

Cara Beth Burnside with a stylish lien air for a Vans ad. Great photo by Brian Fick. Props to Cara for being a trailblazer for women's skateboarding!

Dan Drehobl, stalefish for an Elwood ad. No photo credit given, which is too bad because that is a GREAT photo.

Jake Johnson - nosegrind in San Francisco

Jake Johnson, nosegrind in SF for the Crops section of the January 2009 The Skateboard Mag. Photo was taken by Atiba. I don't think I've ever seen footage of this trick.

Heath Kirchart - Back tail backside flip out Emerica ad and street gap kickflip

From the November 2008 issue of The Skateboard Mag. I was only getting Skateboarder at this time, so I never saw this ad until maybe a week ago. One of the best Emerica ads I've ever seen.

Also, here is the September 2008 Alien Workshop ad of Heath's kickflip over the street gap that bears his name (at least in my skate circles). Photo was taken by Anthony Acosta and appeared in the back of The Skateboard Mag.

Sneaking Around Behind The Iron Curtain

This is an 18-page article in the January 2006 issue of Skateboarder put together by Jonathan Mehring documenting his trek behind the former Soviet Union with the Planet Earth and Ipath teams. Skaters on the trip include Steve Nesser, Bobby Puleo, Kenny Reed, Jack Sabback, Nate Jones and Ed Selego. I always enjoyed how Mehring would make sure to include interesting pictures of local architecture and people in his articles. It really helped give a bit of a larger perspective the spots and places skaters were getting tricks at.

THAT Gino Iannucci FreshJive ad

Uploading this one both for a friend and because it's really cool. FreshJive ads have a cool aesthetic to them, and I always enjoy coming across them in the older magazines.

Jim Greco's interview from the July 2005 The Skateboard Mag (+ cover)

Jim's one of the most interesting professional skateboarders ever, both in his trick selection and what he has to say. I love reading his old interviews.

Also note that he went back to the spot where he did a back 3 off of the roof for his March 2003 Skateboarder interview and did the back 360 kickflip, which is what made it into his Baker 3 part.

I also included the cover from the same issue, which is the frontside boardslide that there's never been footage released of - probably wasn't a make. Regardless, still a really sick photo.

Words by Paul Zitzer and photos by Atiba Jefferson (including the cover).
