Kenny Hoyle's Roll Call interview - TWS January 2011

Kenny Hoyle's Roll Call interview, which came out around the same time as Expedition One's Madness video which was also Kenny's going-pro part. He also got the cover of this issue, which I've never seen a clip of...

The Roll Call interview was done by Cullen Poythress and the skate photos by Matt Daughters.

What's the Gilley Grind?

This page appears in the back of the January 2011 issue of Transworld and explains what the Gilley Grind is, which I believe only Dane Burman has been crazy enough to do on a handrail out in the streets. If I recall correctly, I asked Dane about this trick on Instagram a while back and he said it was terrifying to do. You can see the clip here.

Mike Ballard Photo Retrospective - May 2008 Skateboarder

Intro by Jaime Owens. Some of these photos appeared in previous issues of Skateboarder, many others in other mags or not at all (I think). Really cool to see some of those early 90s board company team photos.

Dennis Does Paris: The adidas Team in Gay Paree - May 2008 Skateboarder

An adidas tour article covering a trip to Paris, which they also produced a tour video for that came in the form of a free DVD within this issue. This was the 7th magazine I'd ever gotten in the mail and I thought that maybe this was something that happened every few issues. Unfortunately, I was wrong. However, a couple of years later, online parts would become a thing, and now we get new skate videos pretty much every single day.

I watched that DVD hundreds of times. You can watch it here on YouTube.

Zach Lyons interview - May 2008 Skateboarder

I originally posted this interview directly to my Instagram account 5-6 months ago, before I had gotten the scanner that I currently use. I rescanned it to have it live in a more permanent place on the blog, and to have it be in better quality. I'll post the original Instagram caption below.

"The Zach Lyons interview from the May 2008 issue of Skateboarder. Intro by Bobby Worrest, words by Adam Salo, and photos by Jonathan Mehring. On the last page of the interview, Zach mentions how his friends make fun of him for having a "gay" taste in music because he likes listening to women singers, and how he thinks that's a dumb perspective to have. This stuck out to me when I read it in 2008 because it was the first time that I personally saw a skateboarder talking about homophobia (I realize that this wasn't the first time ever, skaters like Ed Templeton had been talking about it years prior). It was neat to read an interview where the skater talked about this kind of stuff, even if it was in a brief informal way. I've been stoked on Zach ever since. His flatground nollie 360 flip in Get Familiar helps, too."

The Beauty & The Beast Tour article - January 2010 Skateboarder

This issue centered almost entirely around the 2009 Beauty & The Beast tour, which was the second of the three that Girl & Anti Hero did together. Below is the feature article documenting the trip and all of the other pieces in the magazine that featured riders from the tour, in order off how they appear in the magazine.

I loved watching those tour videos when they came out. Some of the best tours ever. This is also one of the two Skateboarders I have that got water damaged, so the pages are a bit crinkly and there's some glare I couldn't get rid of. I think it's kind of cool, though... gives the scan some personality... maybe.

Tony Trujillo on the cover.
